A differential breather system is designed to manage internal pressure changes within drivetrain components such as the differentials, transfer case, and gearbox.

During normal operation these components generate heat, causing the air and oil inside the housings to expand. When a hot drivetrain component is suddenly exposed to cold water — such as during a river crossing — the internal air rapidly cools and contracts. This temperature change creates negative pressure inside the housing.

If the breather system is located low on the vehicle or becomes submerged, the pressure drop can draw water, mud, or other contaminants into the housing through the factory breather or worn seals. Once contamination enters the system it can mix with the lubricating oil, leading to accelerated wear, corrosion, bearing damage, and in severe cases catastrophic failure of the differential, gearbox, or transfer case.

A breather kit relocates and extends the breather lines to a higher, protected position on the vehicle. This allows the components to safely equalise pressure while reducing the risk of water or debris entering the drivetrain during off-road or water crossing conditions.

Grenadier owners who have experience differential oil leaks that appear to come from the pinion seal. In many cases the seal itself is not the root cause.

The factory differential breather can struggle to vent pressure effectively. When the differential heats up during driving, the oil and internal air expand. If this pressure cannot escape properly, it builds inside the housing and can force oil past the pinion seal, resulting in leaks.

The GrenX Differential Breather Kit provides a more effective solution by allowing the differential housing to vent pressure correctly, particularly when the drivetrain is under load and temperatures rise.

By relieving excess pressure, the kit helps reduce oil leaks, protect seals, and improve the long-term reliability of the differential assembly.

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

Installation should be carried out by a qualified mechanic or an experienced installer. Accessing these components can be difficult, so the use of a vehicle hoist or lift is strongly recommended.

OWNER RESPONSIBILITY

After installation, it is the vehicle owner’s responsibility to regularly inspect and maintain the system. All hoses and fittings must remain securely attached to the differential, transfer case, gearbox, transmission, and any other connected components.

The breather system should be checked periodically to ensure that hoses have not been loosened, damaged, pinched, or torn during driving or off-road use. Any damage could allow dust, water, or other contaminants to enter the drivetrain components.
