Water Crossing, Air Filtration, Inspection & Maintenance Guide
IMPORTANT NOTICE
The GrenX Snorkel and Airbox System is designed to reduce the risk of water, dust and debris
entering the engine intake system. It is not a submarine kit, does not make the vehicle waterproof
and does not eliminate the need for proper driver judgement, vehicle maintenance, safe recovery
planning or compliance with vehicle manufacturer instructions.
Purpose
The GrenX Snorkel and Airbox System improves intake protection while maintaining high airflow and
serviceability for touring, off-road and expedition use. The integrated drain valve assists
drainage of incidental water entering the airbox during normal operation.
Why the GrenX Airbox Includes a Drain Valve & Viewing Window
Unlike many snorkel systems that rely solely on sealing, the GrenX Airbox includes a drain valve
and visual inspection window. The drain valve allows incidental water drainage while the viewing
window provides rapid inspection after water exposure.
River Crossings & Deep Water
Before entering water crossings, close the airbox drain valve and activate the manufacturer's
wading mode where equipped. After the crossing, re-open the drain valve and inspect the airbox
through the viewing window. The drain valve is intended as an emergency safeguard, not permission
to exceed vehicle limits.
Water Crossing Preparation
Assess crossing depth, flow, entry and exit points, recovery options and hazards. Ensure diff,
transmission and transfer case breathers are functioning correctly. GrenX recommends extended
breathers. Avoid entering deep water immediately after heavy towing, highway driving or hard use;
allowing components to cool may reduce thermal shock and seal-
related water ingress risks.
Vehicle Recovery Considerations
If the vehicle becomes immobilised in water, do not restart the engine until the intake system has
been inspected. Owners should note that a Grenadier may require access to the transmission neutral
disengagement mechanism located underneath the vehicle. This may be inaccessible in flooded
conditions, making recovery planning essential before entering water.
Water Crossing Technique
Enter slowly and maintain steady throttle. Avoid sudden acceleration, harsh braking, rapid steering
inputs and unnecessary gear changes. Follow the safest route and maintain a controlled, consistent
speed appropriate for conditions.
Vehicle Modifications & Water Crossings
Larger tyres and suspension modifications may increase practical ground clearance but do not
eliminate water crossing risks. Always refer to the vehicle manufacturer's published specifications
and assess conditions carefully.
Cabin Water Ingress
If water enters the cabin, evacuate it as soon as practical. The Grenadier is equipped with floor
drain valves that should be opened when safe to minimise damage to carpets, trim and electrical
systems.
Air Filtration & Dust Management
GrenX does not recommend oiled air filters due to potential sensitivity of the BMW engine
management and MAF sensor system. GrenX recommends a dry filter element. Performance filters
designed primarily for airflow and horsepower may be suitable for road use but may not provide the
filtration efficiency required for severe off-road conditions. Engine protection should take
priority over maximum airflow. An engine can tolerate minor airflow restriction far better than
dust contamination.
GrenX 8-Layer Dry Filter Element
The GrenX Airbox is designed around a high-quality 8-layer dry filter element. Carrying a spare
filter is recommended for remote touring and dusty environments.
Dust Socks & Pre-Filters
External snorkel socks or pre-filters may provide additional protection during extended dusty
travel. They should be inspected and cleaned regularly. Excessively dirty socks may restrict
airflow and negatively affect performance.
Post-Crossing Inspection
After significant water crossings, re-open the drain valve, inspect the viewing window, inspect the
filter if water ingress is suspected, check for warning lights, inspect snorkel openings for debris
and inspect driveline breathers. If water is visible or suspected, do not operate the vehicle until
the intake system has been inspected.
Viewing Window Inspection
The viewing window is intended as a rapid inspection aid only and does not replace direct
inspection when contamination or water ingress is suspected.
Initial Inspection After Installation
Inspect the snorkel system after approximately 500 km and during the next scheduled service. Verify
bracket alignment, fastener security, hose clamp tightness and sealing integrity.
Periodic Inspection & Maintenance
Inspect the snorkel system during routine servicing, after major trips, corrugated roads, impacts,
significant water crossings or whenever unusual intake behaviour is observed. Vehicles used in
dusty environments should be inspected more frequently.
Snorkel Impact Inspection
After impacts with branches, vegetation, recovery equipment or obstacles, inspect for cracks,
distortion, movement, damaged seals, loose fasteners and air leaks.
Installer Responsibility
Correct installation is critical. The installer is responsible for ensuring all snorkel, airbox,
ducting, hose, clamp and sealing connections are correctly assembled and appropriately sealed. The
installer must verify system integrity after installation.
Driver Reminder
Before water crossings: close drain valve, activate wading mode, assess depth and recovery options.
After crossings: open drain valve, inspect the viewing window and check for signs of water ingress.
Quick Reference
Normal driving: Drain valve OPEN.
Vehicle washing: OPEN.
Heavy rain: OPEN.
Dusty conditions: OPEN.
River crossings: CLOSED.
After crossing: OPEN and inspect viewing window.
Warranty & Disclaimer
Failure to inspect and maintain the snorkel system may reduce performance and affect warranty
eligibility. No snorkel system can guarantee protection from engine damage, water ingress, recovery
costs, vehicle damage or component failure. The vehicle owner and driver remain responsible for
operation, inspection and maintenance.
